The Hard Road - Post 4

Explain what Mr. and Mrs. Porter did to help their daughter. Can you justify their actions? Why or why not?

Both parents did what parents are supposed to do. They helped their daughter through a difficult time in her life. The father took the guilt from her, while the mother told her everything would be fine. They helped with the case, made it seem like the daughter did nothing. While the society may shout that they lied to her, I think they helped her get better mentally and face the facts. What they did was right. They protected their child.
Society today seems to forget that. They forget that a daughter is still a daughter, that a son is still a son. They seem to overlook the fact that parents protect their children. They seem to forget about family.

Mr. and Mrs. Porter helped their daughter in a few ways, one of them probably wasn’t the best thing, was convincing her not to go back to the scene and to hide the car in their garage. I think that if Jennifer had gone back she wouldn’t have been in as much trouble as she was in now, even though she ended up not having to go to prison for the amount of time she was originally facing.

Mr. and Mrs. Porter seemed to have done anything in order to help their daughter. After the 18 minutes of driving in a trance, Jennifer Porter called her parents, hysterically telling them of what had happened. Mr. and Mrs. Porter agreed to meet their daughter at her dance studio, instead of at home. They wiped the blood off of the car and consoled her throughout the night. I feel Porter’s parents did what any parent would do. On the contrary, I feel as though her parents had far too much sympathy toward their daughter. This wasn’t like a murder case, it was definite that their daughter had hit and killed two children, and left three horribly injured. As time passed, her parents stood by her, speaking at press conferences and defending their daughter day in and day out. Not only were they trying to stay by their daughter’s side for the sake of her reputation, they stayed by her side for the sake of her life. With suicide being a huge possibility, Mr. and Mrs. Porter did whatever they could to make sure Jennifer Porter was okay. I agree that Mr. and Mrs. Porter helped their daughter and stayed by her side, because in this situation, Jennifer Porter truly didn’t have anyone; but I feel that they should have been stricter with the ordeal, making their daughter go back to the crime scene immediately. This situation should not have been sugar-coated.

I don’t agree with Kyle because I don’t think that Jennifer Porter’s parents exactly helped her. I think that if she had gone back to the scene she would’ve been able to possibly clear her name instead of going home and having her family hide the car instead. I feel like Porter’s parents possibly gave her too much sympathy because of the fact that she was in a crime scene and fled from it.

Mr. and Mrs. Porter helped their daughter when they testified about her character and the ways that she acted. Jennifer really depended on her parents and when the accident happened the first person she called was her mother. However, instead of hiding all the evidence, they should have encouraged her to do the right thing and turn herself in. I don’t think they were hiding it and planning to keep it hidden, they just needed time to think it all through. I do think that for the most part they did the best that they could to help their daughter. They were all affected by the situation and did what they thought they could under pressure.
