What was your initial reaction to Lisa Wilkins as Thomas French presented her to us?

When I was introduced to Lisa Wilkins, I immediately thought that she was a bad mother. The welfare, the eviction, the several kids, it all seemed a bit much. Then the accident happened, and it seemed that she used that to get ahead in life. To me, it doesn’t seem she really cared about the kids. She even said that the neighborhood was bad, but let her kids wander outside after dark, where no stoplights were.

When I first read about Lisa Wilkins I saw her as someone that had been through a lot in her life but not only has she been evicted multiple times, she’s on welfare with no job. She had dreams of being a school teacher but never went to school for it. She also let her children go to a park in not the greatest area, and her rule for the kids to wait until she went to go get them from the park seems to be different from what she told her daughter Aquina.

First I felt bad for Wilkins, but as I read on that changed. She didn’t seem like a good mother at all, she had children with men that didn’t stick around or went to jail, and she let them go off together when they shouldn’t be responsible for the others. Instead of living off of welfare, she should be trying to get a job for her children’s sake. She said she was tired of moving and always wanted a big house. I don’t think that is a good environment for any kid let alone 6 kids to live in. If she’s so worried about getting robbed or getting shot then you would think she would make her kids stay inside as much as possible.

When first introduced to Lisa Wilkins, I was unsure of what to think of her. The one thing I knew right from the beginning was that she should not have allowed her children to go to the park. Though I understand that it is necessary to place trust in your children, Bryant was just 13 years old; certainly not responsible enough to care for his four younger siblings. I respect the fact that Wilkins walked her children to the park, but she should have made it loud and clear that they were to wait for her to pick them up. Even if they had understood to wait for their mother, I still feel as though it was necessary to be AT the park with her children, making sure they didn’t get hurt. It was mentioned that there were plenty of adults at the park, which could make Wilkins feel better about her children being there alone. On the other hand, with more adults being there, it leaves more of a chance for the children to be abducted. I realize Wilkins was only trying to show her son that she trusted him, but their safety should overpower all. Lisa Wilkins’ decision was anything but responsible.
