Take a look back at the picture of Jennifer Porter on Page 1. What was your initial reaction to seeing this picture? What is it that you see in this picture of Porter?

When I first looked at the picture of Jennifer Porter before I read the story, I saw a criminal. Someone that would be able to live with themselves after killing three children. I think that the biggest thing that drew me into the picture was her eyes, which seem dead and sunken, somewhat empty.

My initial reaction to the photo featured on page one was disgust. There was an emptiness in Porter’s eyes; a sense of deadness. The photo really made Porter appear to be an evil, sick person. The numbness on Porter’s face made my stomach turn; in a way, it was difficult to look at. Before reading ‘The Hard Road,’ I expected the story to be about Jennifer Porter brutally murdering a family; not accidentally hitting children with her vehicle. Porter certainly did not represent what a school teacher, in my mind, should look like.

When I first saw the picture of Jennifer Porter, I thought that she looked scared and depressed. As if someone were blaming her for a serious crime that she didn’t commit. It was the look of someone asking for salvation in a life-changing event. It was the look of someone that was scared, someone that wanted to run and hide in the corner. It was the look of someone that seemed afraid of themselves. All I could think when I saw that was fear.

If there was emptiness in her eyes, wouldn't you think sadness or depression? It doesn't look like she's guilty to me, it looks like she's going through depression.

At a first glance, I saw Porter as a terrible person, someone that didn’t care about the accident and didn’t feel any shame. The more I looked at the picture I saw someone that in a way died. She looks like she’s been through a lot, which she has, and she looks like she’s about to give up on herself. She just looks blank.

I agree with Kelsi in her opinion about the way she looks, I thought when I first saw it I assumed she murdered a family not accidentaly hit a few children. Her eyes seem to hold an emptiness that captures you and makes you want to read the story. It just looks like she's been through alot.
